Harbinger I

I am the harbinger.
I’ll come in when you’re ready.
You leave signs that you’re close,
And I’m sustained on them.
I lick them up from the gutter: trails of blood, soap, and oil;
I hide in steam engines, and shovel sweet coal straight down my throat,
But my split tongue still awaits the deluge.
I follow the ants, burrowing with them into the firmament,
Carrying out the fungus that grows in the bowels of the Leviathan,
But I don’t bring it back, I chew it up on the way out.
I’ve circled in countless insect mills—
That’s how I know when I’ve entered the fourth stage,
But I prefer the hyperreal when I can watch it swirl from the outside
When I can pretend to map out each and every cog in that great engine
Forged from two convergent cones
Condensing cyclic time down to a few months, days, seconds,
A gyrating pyramid tessellated so far,
I've never seen the ocean beyond the edge.
I feel the nectar of the machine quivering on my tongue.
Sometimes, I detonate bombs against my skin to come close to this,
But it's not the same—
This, this is ecstasy.

I’ve built for myself a place where I can observe,
Where I can stare down at the world
Through the frosted floors of a skyscraper built with beams of light
I can see, refracted, the glistening of ectoplasm
Rising up from deep in the earth
Siphoned through pilotis
Into every newborn child
Prismatic oscillation
Total diffraction
Greenhouse cathedral
Plexiglass hell-forge
You don't want your throat slit by the purest white blade
The sharp side of another's inner light
So I need this shelter to protect us together
To contain the gleam with rough-hewn plates
And slices of rusted will
Plucked away from dying brilliances
In their last breath before they crack and shatter
Climbing up high enough into the safety of the scarlet sky
It's the only way anyone could get so far
Nourished only on pesticides from the gutter-womb
That’s how I got here, emperor of the city of inverted desires
Sometimes bits of me escape and drip back down to the light
They move smooth and slick, iridescent like leaking oil
Dripping through storm drains, rolling across concrete
Finding tiny pores I can never close
But still I found my kingdom once I pierced the asbestos tapestry
I stood on stilts of steel, upheld by gilded towers
Lighthouses piercing downward into a bleeding sky of flesh stained blue
I crawl like a rat through rafters of gold and sapphire
You know, it’s really only dark here if you can’t see it for the neon
If you pass by the red lights
If you’ve spent so much time in the rainbow smog
You’d be blind anywhere else
And you'd find even the earth's core too cold
So it's warm pulse could never guide you
Deeper and deeper, higher and higher

I may be far away but I’m still worried about you
Consciousness atrophies without time, after all
I want to bring you my time but in your stasis you may die
I want to bring you a steel colossus
Plans for the construction of towers reaching not to the sky
But piercing down into the earth
I want to let you feel the humming vibration
Of the apparatus beneath the asphalt ruins
Stimulated by earthquakes and pile-driving
To a climax of ejaculating shrapnel
